I am drawn to visit this location on every trip home to Northern Ireland. My parents Bill and Norah Harrison lived in Major Dobbs gatehouse cottage after the war dad was groundsman.I remember them telling stories about living temporarily in the Torrets they lived in one and Humans Elma Mc Master lived in one right after the war ( both military)and how creepy it was. Any more information greatly appreciated. We live in Canada but will be visiting home March April 2022Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06174751145409873145noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8071430214772445370.post-38191750061131345142020-09-01T18:21:05.738-07:002020-09-01T18:21:05.738-07:00Hi Philip, your erudite expertise in these matters...Hi Philip, your erudite expertise in these matters seems to be never-ending.I'm particularly interested in the Dalway connection as some of my immediate ancestors are or were called Dolway, Dollway, Dolloway Dallway etc. and were strongly associated with the tobacco business in Belfast in the 19th and early 20th centuries. There is a dearth of genealogical material concerning the first half of the 19th century for well known reasons but the connection is intriguing. My Grandmother ,Frances Dolway died in 1975 and her two sisters Maria and Margaret died in California in the 60's their father Michael James Dolway owned several tobacconist shops in belfast but when WW1 started he joined up, not in Ireland but in England, I believe he was a lance corporal in the leicestershire Regiment, he was in his mid 40's when he joined uo so it's unlikely he saw much action I think he was associated with what is now called 'logistics'. I believe the original Captain John Dalway also hailed from leicestershire (1570). Anyway to cut a long story short he returned to Belfast, sold all his property and disappeared with his house-maid and hasn't been heard of since. My Grandmother always kept a bust of Gladstone on her fireplace and often referred to him as "a great friend of Ireland" even though she had no nationalist or republican proclivities whatsoever, she and her family didn't like to discuss family history because of what her father did, he left them penniless to fend for themselves... the rest is history so to speak. My Gran did actually mention that she saw the Titanic being built and that the town was in grief when they heard about the disaster. I would love to know if you have any insight into this side of the Dalway/Dolway family or if even if it's the same family! I think it's more tha likely that it is the same family as genealogical records for the name are rare or non-existant outside of South East Antrim -Belfast, any communication on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
